Why do Cooties wear those funny red hats?

What is the Military Order of the Cootie?

The MOC is an honor degree of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), dedicated to promoting social and entertainment programs for veterans and supporting hospitalized veterans through various initiatives.

What does it take to become a Cootie?

To become a member of the Military Order of the Cootie (MOC), you must meet the following criteria:  Active Membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW): You must be a member in good standing with the VFW for at least six months. lotcs.org

Demonstrated Service: During your VFW membership, you should have:Held a position as a Post officer (elected or appointed), orServed on a Post committee, orActively contributed to VFW activities and functions. lotcs.org

Invitation: Membership in the MOC is by invitation. Your application must be certified by your Post Commander and Post Adjutant, confirming your active participation and contributions to the VFW. lotcs.org

Once these requirements are met, you can proceed with the application process to join the MOC.

Why does a Cootie sometimes dress like a clown?

Members of the Military Order of the Cootie (MOC) sometimes dress in clown-like attire to bring joy and laughter to hospitalized veterans. This distinctive appearance helps them stand out and draws attention to their mission of supporting those who have served.

How did the MOC get its name? 

The term "cootie" was a slang term used by World War I soldiers to refer to lice. The organization adopted this name to reflect its origins and connection to military history.

What are the main activities of the MOC? 

The MOC focuses on visiting hospitalized veterans, supporting the VFW National Home for Children, and contributing to various VFW programs, all while incorporating humor and fun into their activities.

What is a "Pup Tent" in the context of the MOC? 

A "Pup Tent" is the term used for a local chapter of the MOC. Members gather in these units to plan and conduct their activities.  There are also "Grand Pup Tents" which is the state level of the MOC.  And, finally there is the "Supreme Pup Tent" which is the national level of our organization

How does the MOC support hospitalized veterans? 

Members, often dressed in distinctive attire, visit hospitals to bring cheer and comfort to veterans, living up to their motto: "Keep them smiling in beds of white."

Is the MOC involved in any charitable organizations?

Yes, the MOC actively supports the VFW National Home for Children in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, through visits, contributions, and special projects.

What is the significance of the red hats worn my MOC members?

Why do Cooties always seem to be insulting one another?

In the MOC we have a distinctive language, where we use words that are the opposite of one another in their usage.  Below are some of the words and their meaning:
Crummy = Wonderful
Lousy = Really Good
Horrible = Outstanding
Mumble = Speak Clearly
Backward = Forward
Upside Down = Right Side Up
Crying = Laughing
